From Outsider to Insider: Overcoming Setbacks and Self-Doubt as an International Researcher

The German academic system offers a wealth of opportunities, but also many challenges for international academics. These often affect not only your professional level, but also your self-confidence and your self-image as a competent scientist. Language barriers, a lack of background knowledge or different ways of working than you are used to may mean that you are not able to fully realise all your competences, which can lead to feelings of insecurity and inadequacy:

➡️ Maybe you’re struggling to fit into your new work culture and environment. You may feel isolated or excluded because you don’t fully understand the unwritten rules or social norms. This can make you feel insecure and you may withdraw rather than actively participate in team meetings or discussions.

➡️ Maybe you find yourself in a situation where, in conferences, meetings or discussions, you repeatedly feel that you can’t communicate your ideas as clearly or accurately as you would like. You may hold back in conversations or be reluctant to express your thoughts for fear of misunderstanding or because you are unsure of the right words to use.

➡️ Maybe you experience more setbacks or negative feedback than usual. A rejected grant application, a critical peer review, or not being invited to an event can cause you to doubt your abilities and question your own achievements, contributing to a distortion of your self-esteem.

➡️ You may also feel that your work is not getting the recognition it deserves. Perhaps your research contributions are undervalued or underappreciated, whether by colleagues, supervisors or in publications. This can lead to frustration and a sense of discouragement, even if you are working hard on your projects.

But whatever your situation, always be reassured that you are not alone! Many international researchers have had similar experiences and difficulties, but they overcome them – and so will you!

What can you do?

💪 The first and most important step is to realise that it is normal to feel insecure in a new environment and that it takes time to adapt and grow. Seek support from those around you, be it mentors, colleagues or support groups. Talk openly about your challenges and fears, as others can often share similar experiences or offer helpful advice.

💪 Set realistic goals and celebrate the small progress you make. Even small steps can help build your self-confidence and self-esteem, and help you approach your work with more confidence.

💪 Finally, be patient with yourself. The process of adapting and integrating into a new culture and work environment does take a lot of time and effort, but over time you will grow and develop, both professionally and personally.

Always remember: You are on the right track and I am confident that you will overcome all the challenges and successfully continue your journey as a successful and fulfilled international scientist in Germany.
